Old Town Music provides a variety of educational tools to help get you started on your journey with the cello. Your playing will improve the fastest with the help of a trained cello teacher. You can call us at 626-793-4730 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to find the teachers that we recommend. We also suggest you check out Pasadena Conservatory.
Your teacher will suggest a method for you to work with, but we're happy to offer some of our suggestions to get you started.
One of the best ways for very young students to begin is with the Suzuki Method. If you want to go the Suzuki Method route, the best way to get started is with the Suzuki Cello Book 1. It's also helpful to listen to theAccompaniment CD as much as possible! If you're a parent, you might want to supplement the method book with Helping Parents Practice, a great Suzuki text designed to help parents make practicing with their children as effective and fun as possible!
If you're looking to learn the traditional route, we suggest Essential Elements Book 1 for the Cello. It includes a great fingering chart, plus CD and introductory video. It makes it easier to begin playing the instrument on your own, but remember, a teacher is still the best way to begin learning!
Of course, it takes more than just a really great book to begin playing the cello. The number of accessories can be overwhelming-metronomes, tuners, cleaning clothes, endpin rests and more! We recommend you start off with just a tuner, a metronome, and an endpin rest. We suggest the Korg CA-1 tuner or the Korg TM-40 Metronome-Tuner combination.
